Senior Portrait Clothing Advice

You may bring whatever outfits you want to wear. For longer sessions bring about 4-5 complete outfits, and about another 5-6 tops. Bring about half of that for the one-hour session. We won’t photograph all of the clothes, but bringing a variety will give us something to work with. Some clothes photograph better than others. Small patterns and/or words tend to be distracting. The brighter the patterns, the more distracting they will be. This isn't to say that patterns or words are ALWAYS a bad idea - if you really like the outfit please bring it in - but solids generally photograph better than bright patterns.

Keep in mind that lighter colors (especially white) may distract from your photo, or reflect unflattering light back onto your face. Very bright or white outfits do not work on overcast days at all. Primary, rich colors are always a good choice.

If you have a class ring, or a letter jacket, or other props and want them in some of your portraits - remember to bring them!

Feel free to bring in outfits related to any activities or sports you are involved with. Most people will bring a few casual outfits, a uniform of some sort, and a dressier outfit - but again, everyone is different - you should bring in what you want to wear and what reflects you as a person.

If you are uncertain about your clothing choices bring in more than the suggested total outfits and we can choose what will look best at the studio.

Boys - would it kill you to put on a button up shirt for grandma?

Bring styling products and hair accessories with you. If an outfit requires a hair-do change, make sure you have everything you need with you, or make arrangements with a stylist to be at your session (we can put you in touch with one, and they generally run about $50).

You are strongly encouraged to bring in a family member or a friend (or both!). They will have the benefits of helping put you at ease, they can check your hair, help you with props and/or pets (there is no place to store pets in the studio however, so if you bring one, have a way for it to go home, or put it in your car after we are done with it), give you clothing advice, and in general give you moral support. Plus they get to enjoy the portrait session with you! You can also include them WITH you in your portraits at no extra charge if you choose.

You may bring in your own CDs to listen to during the session (I’m old, no dirty words) and if you have any specific ideas about your session, please be sure to tell me before the session starts.
